Where it starts
Every one of us wants to turn ideas into reality. Ideas can be as small as getting a glass of water or as big as building a house, writing a book or learning a new skill. What they have in common is that they move us to create something, a thought, a sentence or an action, to make them happen. Not every attempt succeeds, and that is where Educação Plena takes a position: the attempt that did not work is not waste, it is information about the world, about others and about ourselves. Practice comes before explanation, so that the explanation arrives wanted.
The three lenses
Before and during any project, the student examines what may help or hinder the idea in three dimensions we relate to all our lives.
Self
Self-awareness and personality traits: which of my own characteristics push this idea forward, and which hold it back. It begins with knowing oneself.
“What in me helps or hinders this idea?”Other
Empathy and interpersonal skills: understanding how the people around me think and feel, who can help or make it harder, and how to relate to them.
“Who around me can contribute to this idea, and how do I reach them?”World
Systems thinking: the resources, knowledge and context out there, and the interdependencies that organise them, so that I act effectively and understand the consequences of what I do.
“What exists out there that helps or hinders this idea?”A base of values and ethics
The three lenses do not float. Reflection is always grounded in five shared values (ARIES, from their Portuguese initials), and above all in ethics.
Three questions after every action
- What here is required of everyone?
- What would be fair and good for all, even without an obligation?
- What life do I want to live when I decide this?
Students practise this in real projects, because virtue, as Aristotle already noted, is not learned by explanation but by repeated practice in situations that call for the right action.
How it lives inside PensAÍ Lab
In PensAÍ Lab, Educação Plena is the thinking model behind every Authorial Project, the place where the student applies AI to an idea of their own. The method is practised, not lectured.
Ritual of the Three Lenses
At the first milestone of each Authorial Project, about 30 minutes in the logbook: Self, Other and World, then the values filter. A checkpoint two weeks later and an integrating close.
Self rite and the Map of Me
The student picks one to four traits from a palette of fifteen and says whether each will help or hinder the idea, and why. From then on the map enters every project.
Other rite
Socratic questioning and an empathy map applied to a real case of cyberbullying with AI, connected to the module on AI companions.
World rite
Systems thinking through the Parts, Purposes, Complexities routine, applied to the student's own planetary cost of AI.
Where it comes from
Educação Plena combines philosophy of education, the tradition of the formation of the subject, Constructionism and cognitive research on active learning. The three lenses have well-documented ancestors.
Personal well-being, ecological sustainability and social harmony as one interconnected whole.
Inner focus, focus on others and outer focus, the perception of broad patterns and complex systems, as the three competences of development.
Pineau's tripolar theory of formation (eco, hetero and self-formation), to which Paul adds a fourth pole, onto-formation.
Learning is strongest when we build something personally meaningful and shareable. With Dewey, Vygotsky, Fröbel and Freire in the background.
Emotion and curiosity modulate how memories form; active-learning environments raise performance and favour transfer to new problems.
Creative Learning, Design Thinking (Stanford d.school), Agency by Design thinking routines, the Socratic method, self-empathy, mindfulness and project-based learning.
